Demetrius J. Waarsenburg (1964) studied Classical Culture and Languages at Leiden University (1982-1988). Specializing in Italian archaeology, he became a long-term participant and staff-member of the Dutch excavations in the antique town of Satricum (Latina, Italy). The Iron Age cemetery of Satricum (9th-7th centry BC), and its significance for the interpretation of Roman and Etruscan archeology, became the subject of his PhD research (1989-1993), which he mostly conducted at Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome. The resulting PhD thesis he defended on Februray 2, 1994 at the University of Amsterdam (cum laude). In the same year, he was awarded a Niels Stensen Stipendium, which allowed how to visit and study a full year in situ all major excavation sites and research institutes in the Mediterranean, from Egypt and the Levant to Turkey, Greece and Italy. From 1995 to 1999, Waarsenburg held a postdoctoral fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, running a research programme on the earliest stages of Roman and Etruscan religion with students and PhD researchers in Rome and Amsterdam; as a sideline, he further specialized in 19th century archaeology practice. In 2001, Waarsenburg crossed over to the Dutch Ministry of Culture, Education and Science (Ministerie van OCW), where he was elected head of the Literature and Librararies department; in this capacity he was responsible for (a.o.) the acquisition of part of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (the Ritman Library) for the State of the Netherlands. From 2005 to 2009, he developed and directed new projects for the Directorate of Higher Education of the Ministry, setting up (a.o.) two Dutch research institutes in Rabat (Morocco) and Ankara (Turkey), respectively. In the autumn of 2009, he was appointed director of the newly established research institute connected with the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica.
Demetrius J. Waarsenburg is the author of “The Northwest Necropolis of Satricum. An Iron Age Cemetery in Latium Vetus”(1994), “Satrcium, Cronaca di uno scavo. Ricerche archeologiche alle fine dell’Ottocento”(1999), and published numerous articles in his period as a scholar of ancient history (1988-2000). With his recent return to academia, he happily foresees the resumption of his scholarly activities. For a full list of publications, click the link below.
