Occult South Asia: From the 19th to the 21st Century.

23-24 November 2018

History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents (HHP), along with the Department of Religious Studies (University of Vienna), will be sponsoring a workshop on Occult South Asia to be held in Vienna in November 2018. This academic event will be the first major initiative to bridge the gap between the fields of Western Esotericism and South Asian studies. It will bring together scholars from both the fields who will discuss their research and collaborate to introduce a new direction of academic discipline. The workshop aims to contribute to a critical and nuanced understanding of:
  • occult and esoteric currents and their practitioners in modern South Asia
  • the impact of South Asian ideas and practices on modern esoteric and occult currents on the global stage.
South Asia will thus be viewed as a theme as well as a site for the study of esotericism and occultism. This Workshop is organized by Professor Karl Baier (Department of Religious Studies, University of Vienna) and Mr. Mriganka Mukhopadhyay (PhD candidate at the HHP).
